AEON & THE HAND OF GOD
Five years ago I had never painted anything. I was terrified of a blank canvas, I just didn't know what I was supposed to do with it. I stood at the edge of the world on an island called Siargao with nothing but an endless expanse of the Pacific before me when the earth started to quake. Tsunami sirens blared, there was nowhere to run, nowhere to go. It was 2am and the hills were an hour motorbike ride away. At a bonfire with a few friends we bought a bottle of rum, each picked a coconut tree to climb, and raised a toast to the end of the world.
Fortunately, no wave came, but the dreams sure did. Fever dreams of wild scenes, shaken awake each hour by aftershock tremors. In those dreams I walked the gallery halls of a thousand paintings never painted, and I finally knew what I would make.
Aeon is the second composition of one of these dream paintings - a sequel to the very first artwork I ever created. It was a challenge to myself, a measure of my skill, a test of the many lessons and skills I have learned in the five years since I first conquered my fear of the blank page.
Every five years, I hope to return to this composition—to challenge my growth, interrogate my skill, and honor the moment that first swept me away.
EXPERIMENTAL DARKROOM PHOTOGRAPHY
No one alive uses the techniques I do. It’s an amalgamation of alternative darkroom processes. A secret knowledge learned from forgotten books. Refined to my own approach. Large hand-made photographic prints on canvas, wood, and metal.
